MOO! BAAAAH!! OINK!!!
Once upon a time in the 1970s a family with a farm wanted to get rich. So they drew up a plan to put seven hundred building lots on Katama Farm. That’s not a typo–that’s SEVEN HUNDRED. Neighbors soon formed “The Committee to Do Something,” which worked with the Vineyard Conservation Society and the town to save the farm, which they succeeded in doing in 1977. The town leased the farm to series of dairy operations, with limited success, until The FARM Institute (TFI) moved in in 2005.
The FARM institute now runs a myriad of summer and year-round programs for children and adult volunteers on a 162 acre working farm that raises poultry, pork, beef, sheep, and produce. Visitors are always welcome, especially if they’re willing to shovel some, er, compost.
