Juneteenth Martha’s Vineyard is a multicultural celebration which includes music, speakers, music, delicious food, and more. A celebration of freedom, Juneteenth was recognized on June 19, 1865 — two years after the Emancipation Proclamation — when the United States finally reached abolition of slavery. At the end of the 17th century, Martha’s Vineyard emerged as a port for maritime business. Though the Island is known to have been engaged in the slave trade, the community supported abolition as early as 1787. Former slave and preacher John Saunders is credited with bringing Methodism to what is now referred to as Oak Bluffs. During the early 20th century, Oak Bluffs became a popular destination for middle-class Black families seeking a reprieve from segregation and discrimination. This tradition continues today, with Oak Bluffs serving as a cultural hub for African Americans.
