Description

Heidi Feldman and Curtis Friedman are builders of both community and a sea salt business. They became year-round residents 2001, and started with raising Shiitake mushrooms in their beautiful oak forest, but as nature would have it, sea salt eventually seemed to be the way to go. They offer their selection of Vineyard-inspired Sea Salt varieties, including a flavorful smoked one, on Saturdays at the West Tisbury Farmer’s Market.

History

Martha’s Vineyard Sea Salt from Down Island Farm is produced by husband and wife team of Heidi Feldman and Curtis Friedman, a tech consultant-turned-entrepreneurial farmer and carpenter who share a commitment to local, sustainable food production. MV Sea Salt produces two grades of salt – a coarse, natural grade known as “traditional” or “finishing” salt and sel gris, a more mineral-dense, moist salt. Local seawater is collected, filtered and evaporated on their nearly 10-acre farm in a large, solar-powered greenhouse-like structure. You can find their salt in a number of local products, served at Vineyard restaurants, and sold in packages at the Saturday Farmers’ Market as well as on-line and in the marketplace. “MV Sea Salt is more moist and tastes brinier than the sea salt you’d buy in a store,” says Heidi. “It tastes like Martha’s Vineyard.”
